Ideas for walks
« Following in the footsteps of the Saint-Etienne Monks »
Distance: approximately 5 km (3.11 miles)
Duration: approximately 1 ½ hours
Start off at the « Place du Marché » Square. Follow the « Chemin des Fontaines » path, beside which is the « Source aux Moines » (Monks' Spring), documented in 1096.
Then head for the Saint-Étienne Roman church, a listed building dating from the XIIth century. Admire the chevet, the sculptures on the chapiters and the modillions. Enter the choir and focus your attention on the historiated chapiters: the stoning of Saint-Étienne, David and the Bear, the eucharistic doves and the vine shoots.
When you come out, spend time in the old cemetery (listed in 1936), and read the inscriptions on the steles in the old nave.
Go to « rue du Logis » road then to the Town Hall, the abbot's former dwelling place and head for the « de Verdure » Theatre, where numerous events take place in the summer.
Walk alongside the Park and come out into « avenue du Parc des Sports ». Go up the footpath opposite which comes out to « avenue de Nauzan-Plage ». Then go along the latter until you come to the « Plage de Nauzan » beach.
Go up part of the « Promenade de Nauzan » esplanade, where exhibitors display their goods in the late night markets every Monday evening in July and August, then walk to the « Sentier des Douaniers » footpath (GR4).
Come back along « avenue Frédéric Garnier », « Chemin des Dunes » path, « Parc de la Mairie » park, « Chemin des Écrevisses » path and finally you are back to the « Place du Marché » Square.
